Frequently asked questions
How does Odoproof get my journeys? +
It securely connects to your Tesla account and reads your journeys automatically — no dongle and no manual entry.
Will my logbook satisfy Revenue? +
Odoproof keeps a contemporaneous logbook with date, from/to, distance in km and purpose, plus a running business-kilometres total — the evidence Revenue expects for BIK, motor expenses and VAT recovery. It is not tax advice; your accountant remains your source of truth.
Can it retrieve my past journeys? +
Tracking begins once you connect your Tesla; journeys are captured going forward. There is no reliable way to reconstruct history you didn't record.
I have a company car — does this help? +
Yes. A logbook proving your business kilometres can move you into a lower BIK band and stop Revenue's 8,000 km private default from over-charging your notional pay.
Is my data safe? +
We use least-privilege access to your Tesla data, encrypt it, and never sell it. See our Security page.
How much does Odoproof cost? +
Three plans: $9/mo for up to 3 vehicles, $49/mo for up to 30, and a Custom plan for more — contact contact@odoproof.com.
Does an electric Tesla escape BIK in Ireland? +
No. A 0g/km Tesla sits in the lowest CO2 category (A1 for 2026) and gets a €30,000 OMV reduction for 2026, but a taxable Benefit-in-Kind still applies and its percentage still depends on your proven business kilometres.
What is the 8,000 km private assumption? +
If you cannot produce documentation of your business and private split, Revenue lets your employer assume 8,000 km of your driving are private. This typically raises your BIK, which is why a logbook proving your actual business kilometres matters.
Do I need a logbook to claim the 20% low-business-kilometres BIK reduction? +
Yes. The 20% reduction of the cash equivalent requires you to travel between 8,000 and 24,000 business km, work at least 20 hours a week, spend at least 70% of your working time away from base, and keep a logbook evidencing it.
How much VAT can a business reclaim on a Tesla? +
Up to 20% of the VAT on a qualifying passenger motor vehicle, provided the car is used at least 60% for business, tested over a two-year period, with clawback if business use falls below the threshold.
How long must I keep my Tesla mileage records in Ireland? +
Six years. Revenue can ask you to produce mileage and supporting records over a six-year look-back to substantiate BIK, motor-expense deductions and VAT recovery.
Be first to keep your Tesla kilometres audit-proof.
Based on Revenue guidance on private use of employer-provided vehicles, motor expense deductions and VAT on qualifying passenger vehicles. Informational only — not tax advice.
