Frequently asked questions
How does Odoproof get my trips? +
It securely connects to your Tesla account and reads your trips automatically — no dongle and no manual entry.
Will my logs satisfy HMRC? +
Odoproof keeps contemporaneous records with date, postcodes, distance and purpose, and a running business-use percentage — the kind of substantiation HMRC expects for Benefit-in-Kind, Self Assessment and VAT. It is not tax advice; your accountant remains your source of truth.
Can it retrieve my past trips? +
Tracking begins once you connect your Tesla; trips are captured going forward. There is no reliable way to reconstruct journeys you didn't record.
I have a company car — does this help? +
Yes. A pure-electric Tesla has no Car Fuel Benefit Charge — electricity isn't a 'fuel' — but clean journey and charging records let you reclaim business charging at HMRC's Advisory Electricity Rate and keep your Benefit-in-Kind reporting right.
Is my data safe? +
We use least-privilege access to your Tesla data, encrypt it, and never sell it. See our Security page.
How much does Odoproof cost? +
Three plans: $9/mo for up to 3 vehicles, $49/mo for up to 30, and a Custom plan for more — contact contact@odoproof.com.
Do electric cars have to pay the Car Fuel Benefit Charge in the UK? +
No. HMRC does not treat electricity as a 'fuel', so the Car Fuel Benefit Charge does not apply to a pure-electric company car such as a Tesla. This differs from petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid cars.
What is the benefit-in-kind rate on a Tesla company car for 2026/27? +
The appropriate percentage for a pure-electric company car is 4% for 2026/27. It rises by one to two points a year, reaching a 9% cap by 2029/30. The benefit is list price times this percentage times your marginal tax rate.
What is the Advisory Electricity Rate for reimbursing company-EV business miles? +
From 1 September 2025, HMRC's Advisory Electricity Rate is 8p per mile for home charging and 14p per mile for public charging. These rates are reviewed quarterly, so check the current figure before each claim.
Does a mileage log reduce my company-car benefit-in-kind? +
No. Benefit-in-kind is based on list price and the appropriate percentage, not on how many business miles you drive. The mileage log supports business-mileage reimbursement, VAT recovery and self-employed cost apportionment instead.
What details must every business journey record show for HMRC? +
Each business journey should show the date, start and end locations including postcodes, the purpose of the trip and the distance travelled. Commuting to a regular workplace must be logged as private, and HMRC accepts electronic and telematics records.
